Characters: every single character including spaces and punctuation. Characters (no spaces): useful for platforms with character limits that exclude spaces. Words: counted by splitting on whitespace — a reliable measure for most purposes. Sentences: counted by detecting sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs: counted by detecting double line breaks. Reading time: estimated at 238 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed.
A standard A4 page of text contains roughly 500 words. A typical blog post is 800–1500 words. A short story is 1000–7500 words. A novel is typically 70,000–100,000 words. Twitter/X allows 280 characters. LinkedIn posts perform well at 150–300 words. Email subject lines over 60 characters are often truncated.
