Characters, words, sentences and reading time.
Knowing the length of your text is important in many professional and creative contexts. Blog editors have word count targets. Social media posts have character limits. Academic essays have maximum lengths. Email subject lines perform better under 50 characters. This word counter gives you all the metrics you need at a glance.
Characters: every single character including spaces and punctuation. Characters (no spaces): useful for platforms with character limits that exclude spaces. Words: counted by splitting on whitespace โ a reliable measure for most purposes. Sentences: counted by detecting sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs: counted by detecting double line breaks. Reading time: estimated at 238 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed.
A standard A4 page of text contains roughly 500 words. A typical blog post is 800โ1500 words. A short story is 1000โ7500 words. A novel is typically 70,000โ100,000 words. Twitter/X allows 280 characters. LinkedIn posts perform well at 150โ300 words. Email subject lines over 60 characters are often truncated.
